EOC Week 10: Up in the Air

In the movie “Up in the air “The main character played by George Clooney is a man that job require to fired people. His position required great communication skills, potions and verbal skills. If I would have to handle the main character job ,I would definitely look to educate my self better in execute this type of trade. It is very difficult to break the news to someone about loosing his or her position. There is a lot of question why and why and why. This job involve strong personality and a lot of experience would be the best technique to deal with very disagreeable situations.Maybe the new arrangement of firing people online is the answer to dealing with the awkwardness of firing employees.Right now a lot of people can relate to this situation since the economy is in down and unemployment is high.Assume many employers have to discharge even the longest company employees. Since they’re no other option, but letting them go. At least the company can do is letting them go with dignity. So preparing a fair way package and emotional or physical support is very important. It is also very important in today’s business world to fallow the latest happening in technology, since it seams like this is sometimes the main reason for people getting fired. They fall behind and are consider “old news”.

If I was the lead character in this movie I would handle the main character crisis with similar approach. Communication, patience are the main key to handle anxious situations. I enjoy his skills of great communication in groups and as a individual. The business industry expects a lot from managers or people that are in charge. To be successful in its trade it is a very challenging issue. The main character mirror a real business world experience.

BOC Week 10: Getting Fired

I never had the experience of firing or hiring somebody. Based poorly on another person experience of getting fired I understand that is very unpleasant t experience. Its leave very bad feel of not for feeling the expectations of an employer but also possibly a failure of performing job requirements.Than they are consequences a person have to deal with after getting fired .The suspension dos not look good on future resume. When a person get fired they should not makes arguments why and why .The best thing to do is leave the place of employment and make assessments how to improve employment performance in the future.

OSHA and employee rights:

OSHA’s mission has always been the same: to make sure that the safety and health concerns of all American workers are being met. The agency has developed specific workplace standards and polices businesses to make sure these standards are being met. It also provides training and educational programs for small business owners and corporations and works to establish partnerships geared toward improving workplace safety and health.

EAP and employee help:

An EAP is an employer-sponsored service designed for personal or family problems, including mental health, substance abuse, various addictions, marital problems, parenting problems, emotional problems, or financial or legal concerns. This is typically a service provided by an employer to the employees, designed to assist employees in getting help for these problems so that they may remain on the job and effective. EAP originated with a primary drug and alcohol focus with an emphasis on rehabilitating valued employees rather than terminating them for their substance problems. It is sometimes implemented with a disciplinary program that requires or strongly encourages that the impaired employee participate in EAP. Over the years, EAP has expanded to also incorporate not only mental health and substance abuse issues but also health and wellness and work/life types of concerns. Although one facet of EAP services is focused on the individual employee and their family members, another component is the services offered to the organization. This may include prevention, training, consultation, organizational development and crisis response services.

EOC Week 9: Personal Freedom vs Union Membership

Union membership v.personal freedom it is a very difficult choice to make. Union membership give a strong support to employees legally and in many other areas.Union membership are most popular in socialist and communist countries, where people mostly looking to satisfy their basic survivor needs.Meaning getting paycheck that will assure food, shelter and clothing.United States is a consider a individualist type of country which means we prefer personal freedom over collectivism(union membership).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*A majority of union members now work for the government, partly because massive layoffs in the recession plunged the private sector's union levels to a record low.

-Local, state and government workers make up 51.5 percent of all union members — becoming the majority of organized labor for the first time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

-Private sector union membership plummeted by 10 percent last year, while government unions posted slight gains.

-The shift shows the continued difficulty unions face in trying to revive a movement that has declined steadily since its peak of about 35 percent of workers in the 1950s. And it undermines the traditional ability of unions to push private sector wages higher.

-Overall, union membership declined by 771,000 workers, to 15.3 million. That's 12.3 percent among all workers, dropping from 12.4 percent in 2008.

BOC Week 9:History of labor unions in the United States

The roots of our country's trade unions extend deep into the early history of America. Several of the Pilgrims arriving at Plymouth Rock in 1620 were working craftsmen. Captain John Smith, who led the ill-fated settlement in 1607 on Virginia's James River, pleaded with his sponsors in London to send him more craftsmen and working people.
19th-Century Origins
While its roots go as far back as the 1820s, the U.S. labor movement remained largely unorganized until Samuel Gompers was elected president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1886. The late 19th century saw strikes among unions across several industries, including mine workers, iron and steel workers, and carpenters. Although unions often met violent opposition from employers, their bargaining power increased under the leadership of Gompers, who increased the union's membership into a powerful political force.

21st Century
Debate continues about the necessity and value of labor unions. Manufacturing News reported an Ohio State University study that concluded that unions represented a negative economic force by making U.S. labor less competitive, costing the U.S. economy $50 trillion over 60 years. On the other hand, a World Bank review presented a more favorable review of 1,000 studies on the impact of collective bargaining and unions, concluding that under the right conditions, high unionization rates can lead to lower unemployment, higher productivity and faster adjustment to economic events.
For the past forty years there has been a steady decline in both union membership and influence. There are several reasons for such a decline, the first having to do with employers keeping their bussines union-free. Some were active in their opposition and even hired consultants to devise legal strategies to combat unions. Other employers put workers on the management team by appointing them to the board of directors or establishing profit-sharing plans to reward employees The second reason for union decline is that new additions to the labor force have traditionally had little loyalty to organized labor. Because more and more women and teenagers are working and their incomes tend to be a family's second income, they have a proclivity towards accepting lower wages, thus defeating the purpose of organized labor.

Week 8 Eoc:Sexual harrasment.

When you're young, your whole life is about the pursuit of fun. Then, you grow up and learn to be cautious. You could break a bone or a heart. You look before you leap and sometimes you don't leap at all because there's not
always someone there to catch you. And in life, there's no safety net. When did it stop being fun and start being scary?

*thinkexist.com/quotation/maybe...t...to.../258229.html Sex and the City quotes*

I like this quote very much.It is from a movie "Sex in the city".Very much related to today’s movie topic about sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment can be a serious issue when either men or women are being harassed. It can ruin peoples career or sometimes even life’s. The quote above makes it very clear that line between fun, flirting and sexual harassment is very thin. Some unwelcome express of feelings can be frustrating and uncomfortable .It is defiantly very difficult to deal with situations like this. That is why clear spell regulations and rules would ease the confusion.People of the same sex can also be victims of sexual harassment. That is why consulars availability counts ,to help deal with tough situations like this.In the twenty first century sexuality is a very open in a lot of ways.It makes more difficult to cope with sexual harassment at work.

Week 7 EOC: How to Evaluate Employee Performance in 15 Easy Steps

Evaluate Experience

What did you learn?

By evaluating employees in fifteen easy steps I have learned what questions to ask when evaluating an employees. What plays important role in evaluating staff and also what questions should be avoid or are actually illegal to ask.

What caught you by surprise?

What caught me by surprise is that there are actually a lot of things managers have to find out about employees in order to perform the evaluation correctly. It is also surprising how much time the evaluation took. Not just from the employee time ,but also the employer.

How prepared were you?

For this particular evaluation I was not prepared well. During this practice I have actually gained some great experience. My next assessment will be improved a lot.The praparation for the questionnaire plays important role since the results are either useful or useless for the company.

Evaluate theeither members of your group.

It is difficult to evaluate members of the students body .I know very little or nothing about them. Never the less I can give objective opinion about one of the student members ,George.

By name, how did they participate?

George was a very active participant in the evaluation. He answers all the 15 evaluation questions. He made the process simple and very pleasant. Some of the questions could make the participants nervous or stress. He was very understanding and participates in the evaluation completely.

Do you think they (by name) could be viable candidates for a real job? Explain.

George is a very valuable candidate for any job. His intellectuality, intelligence and integrity make any job easy to perform.

Would you want them to represent your school in a job interview situation as a graduate of The Art Institute?

Yes.I would like George to represent our school in the interview as a graduate of Art Institute. He is a hard working person very eloquent and reliable as a future employee. He also as a very positive opinion about the Art Institute .

How could this experience be improved for you? For the class.?

I would like for him to represent the school in the job interview as a graduate of The Art Institute .His resume and his personality characteristics are high quality and in high demand by many employers especially in the culinary industry.

. The experience could be improved by giving an advance time to work on review the questions, before the evaluation. Also uncfontroable surrounding should be adjusted accordingly to everyone individually. Sometimes uncontrobale proximate can make the evaluation less valid.

Eoc week6 : Steps in job training instruction .

Step1The “Consolidadet”company didn’t fallow any or very few steps in job instruction training. The new secretary look like she was very nervous about her new job, because of that she was clumsy on the first day at work. She went thru a very brief orientation with another secretary, which was very unprofessional and contain very little valuable information.

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.187

  • “Organizations must provide training to new employees to transform their high potential into high performance. In the hospitality industry, services and quality determine the success or failure of a property”

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.188

  • "Most experts agree that training should be viewed s continuous cycle rather than a single event .Training cycle begin with a need assessment ,or identification of a problem. This problem usually begin results from discrepancy's between a desired outcome and what really happens".

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.191

  • "An individual analysis identifies the strength and weaknesses of the employee performing the job.The purpose of individual analysis is to specifically determine which employees required what type of training.Sometimes ,training programs are design for the entire department.
  • Step2.Present the tasks or skill.
  • The new employee was never shown and present the new tasks. From the very beginning she was confused about her specific responsibilities and even have a very difficult time operating the copy machine which almost result in her getting physically hurt.

    Step3.Try out the performance.

This step of the instructions was very helpful for the new secretary, since the stuff of the "Consolidated" company was overwhelmingly friendly and the new boss was correcting every error she made.” Consolidated " company did’t spend any money to perform correctly the steps in job instruction training.

    Step4.Fallow up.

In the final step in the job instruction training of the new secretary position, there was never a fallow up. The secretary was left alone and performed on her own. Hardarly anyone check on her. Assistance with anything was not reducing gradually, but rather very immediately. Overall the steps in job instruction training at the "Consolidated” was very old fashion and not very productive

BOC :RESUME

BOC WEEK 6:Stolen Valor law suites.

The Vietnam Readjustment Act of 1974 was design to provide Vietnam Veterans with protected group status for a period of four years after their discharge. So when a company hires a Vietnam Veteran over another person, the company actually is not breaking the law. It is believed that Vietnam Veterans’ served their country and sacrifice their life’s so the least we can do for them is offer them a job in exchange for service that dos not have a price.Nevertheless all employees should be treated with respect and giving respectfully time to evaluate their qualities.

Week 6:Stolen Valor

Stolen Valor Act Is Declared Unconstitutional by Circuit Court

I think “The stolen Valor act “ is very unfair to the real heroes ,that actually fought in wars for very important believes.Claiming someone else’s achievements as your owned is wrong. The copyright for authors writings have a better protection than the soldiers and heroes who sacrifice their life’s for our freedom. Claiming another person writings as your own is consider plagiarizing and violating copyrights,so why claiming achievements that never occur are made legal. That is why “Stolen Valor “ is consider in my opinion unjust.Stolen Valor Act is a very unfair act and also immoral. Actually legalizes lying. Why work for anything hard, when this act allows us to make up history and past of our life’s the way its convenient for us or it is require for the applied job. I think it is wrong for anybody to make up a resume that will contribute unfairly to our success. Our success should be strictly based on hard work and honest accomplishments.Honest history of our achievements shows our truthful personality and character.People should be judge on their correct characteristics not on what they wish to be.

This act is very morally wrong. We are setting a bed example for our children with this act.Lying is something it should not be a way to success.Laying about military honors should be a crime.Creating a resume to make us look more appealing to potential employees is huge mistake."The stolen Valor Act " is not a a way to express our freedom of speech.

Facebok,Twiiter and other social networks are maybe places to infalte personality and physical appearnce ,military honors are to significant to be dishonest about.

Eoc week 4:Mini case study p.185

1.What advice would you give Bob Borich?
Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.169
"On the first day of new job ,employees face new surrounding ,work rules ,responsibilities ,bosses and co-workers.At best ,this combination of new things may make an employee feel unsecured."
Well design orientation may be the key to Bob Borich problem.Welcome new employees ,arranging a welcome party or even take them to lunch the first day of work.Avoiding to much paper work orientation kit and orientation fallow up are great ways to make new employees feel comfortable in new job.
2.How unique do you believe Bob Borich current situation is?
Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.169
"Employee turnover in the hospitality industry often averages as much as 200 to 300 percent per year.Statistically speaking ,this means that the entire staff of hospitality operation turns over two to three times per year."
I Bob Borich situation is very unique .A lot of employers have deal with the same dilemma nevertheless they are a lot of avenues to deal with this type of problem.High turn over means that employees are unhappy with their compensation or work environment.Making changes int the company in the way that will benefit the employees can lower the number of employeee turnover.

3.What parts of orientation should be turned over to employees to conduct?
Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.169
"New employees have many questions about their jobs and their new organization. These questions must be answered quickly and effectively to get employee's off on the right foot".
Some parts of orientation should be turn to employees ,especially the part where employees can express their opinions .Also interacting with other coworkers and share experiences is a grate approach to empower the employees. Interacting with other employees and introduction to each other should be turn to employees and allowed appropriate time to get to know each other and feel comfortable around.

Week 3 Eoc: Networking and External Sources

In today’s economy external networking can be a good source for recruiting new employees. Some of the booming future workforce can be found in:
Student Organizations. That is when hiring targets are young educated people. With expectation to further grow of the business and bring “new blood” on board with new ideas into the company. Educational background plays important role since this could help produce new managers for the business
.
Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods “Some of the techniques managers use to forecast the internal supply of labor for a hospitality operation is to reevaluate the skills of current employees and find out if more training is required.”
External recruiting
-advantages
Give recruiters an opportunity to see how things are on the outside by talking to applicants
-is sometimes cheaper than training
-avoids many political problems associated with internal recruiting
Disadvantages
-morale problems can develop if current employees feel that they have nub opportunity to advance in the company
-Can lower productivity
-Recruits can seems not what they were originally promised

Eoc week3:Culinary Survivors

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.93”Forecasting the internal supply of labor begins with a careful inventory of present staff and their current skills. Managers should also anticipate the ability of current employees to acquire new skills.”

“El Sombrero” is a great example of culinary survivor. Today’s economy its in its lowest in many years. Hospitality and food industry doing whatever it takes to survive the predicament.”El Sombrero “ one of many family owned restaurants in Las Vegas, is going thru very tough times. Cutting hours, downsizing the number of employees, is how “El Sombrero “is managing the situation. Trying to save money and save the business. The restaurant was first open in 1950. Family owned restaurant looking for help from its own family members, which surprisingly doesn’t come easy .The younger generation doesn’t like to work long hours and a manual labor like their parents did when they start the business. Numbers of customers decreased in the last year. Aragon, the current owner would like to retire and sell the place .In the mean time, the business is barley hanging on…

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.87
“While the process of recruiting and selecting employees is an expensive one, it is considerably less expensive than the alternative: processing unqualified staff. Ultimately, selecting unqualified employees results in repeating the same process over and over.”

Many restaurants trying different approach to survivor today’s tough economy. Trying to keep old traditions may be difficult. Sometimes old tradition has to be combine with some newer approaches in order to do well in today’s market. Saving money on interior decoration or equipment is what “Bob Taylor Ranch House “is doing. The restaurant opened in1997and”The only thing have been changed is the bar has a lot of Steelers stuff added” Said the owner. Savings is the key term for all the hospitality industry businesses.

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.93”Skills inventories list each employees current skills, ability to learn new skills, qualifications, and career goals. Many hospitality operations today compile and maintain skills inventories in computerized Human Resources Information System. Some businesses still maintain skills inventories manually.”

Another example of culinary survivor is a restaurant that took more traditional approach to survive the jam.” The golden steer” a restaurant open in1958.

The restaurant is relying mostly on its customers loyalty. Keeping old traditions and making feel customers at home is also a good approach to survive tough times in a hospitality business. The restaurant has been in business for over 40 years. Some of the employees are the original once since the restaurant open. They become friends with the loyal customers’ .The dress code is very old fashion and so is the food, which is made from scratch. The marketing director, John Fondy believes that the restaurant is staying in business because “…Its stay thru to their original format”. Competitions grow rapidly in recent years. Customers have a lot choices when it comes to steakhouses in Las Vegas. Nevertheless “The golden Steer” managed to stay in business.

Week 2 EOC: This Charming Man

"This charming man movie "shows a recession time in a Dutch economy and at the same time a difficult moment for Dutch’s to find a job, which has a very negative influence on relations with immigrants.

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.18 Reform and Control Act “The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was design to regulate the employment of aliens in the United States. Under this act employers with four or more employees are prohibited from discriminating against applicants on the basis of citizenship or nationality.”

About 11 million illegal reside in the U.S., according to Department of Homeland Security estimates. In the past year, the department criminally charged a record 180 owners, employers and managers, compared with 114 in 2009. Since January 2009, it has imposed about $50 million in fines on businesses that employed illegal immigrantsLast month, for instance, clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch agreed to pay $1.04 million to settle charges that the company had deficiencies in its employee-verification system.According to the existing federal law, employers are not allowed to keep the original certified copies of the employee’s birth certificates for the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification processing. Employers can only have the photocopies of those birth certificates. In case, employers choose to keep the photocopies of the documents, then they should carry out the process for all irrespective of their national origin or citizenship status.

Eoc week2: Zippy Airline Catering

1.Are the changes made by the hospitality company significant redesign of the work done? Why or why not?

Job analysis will determined what will be done in a job. This plays important role in Salys case because she is the one that will have to make important changes. The changes that were made by the new company defiantly were a great idea for a large company that is expecting to cater and provide service for a bigger number of customers. The production –line approach of preparing meals, will speed up the process and in the end serve more customers and hopefully the sales will go up. Sale are never consistent a successful business. Instead, sales in hospitality are characterized of series of peaks and valleys.

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.81”Job analysis-Processes of determining the tasks, behaviors, and characteristics essential to a job."

2.What do you think will happen as result of this redesign?

Job design determined how the job will get done .In this situation the company redesign will define the combination of tasks and responsibilities associated with the job.As results of redesign I believe the company should be a success. That all depends on how careful and detail managers will executed all the resources.

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.81”Job enrichment-Process of improving a job by adding responsibilities that required different skills. Sometimes called vertical job expansion.”

3.What steps would you have taken before initiating substantial changes in the way work is done at Zippy Airline Catering?

Before initiating substantial changes in the way the work is done at Zippy Airline Catering, I would definitely research the market and try to find out if expanding the company is what customer’s desire. In some cases consumers preferred a small businesses with a lot of individual attention. That’s where hospitality managers often use the forecasting methods.

Managing Hospitality Human Resources Robert H.Woods p.81”Seasonality –Many hospitality organizations are subject to variations in business depending on the season. Seasonality must be taken in to consideration when forecasting anticipated business volume.”
